I took a short trip to Louisville, Kentucky for the weekend and if you haven't been, then I recommend you do so. We had coffee at Heine Brothers in Crescent Hill and brunch at Toast on Market, among other things.

We've got snow on the ground here in DC. (The photo is from one of last winter's many snow days in New York.) Hope your Monday is a good one.

i went to strand bookstore this afternoon to browse; it's exciting to see that more and more books by classic authors are getting some well-designed cover makeovers. i'll admit that i do have fun playing with our ipad, but i will never use it to read books. there's just no substitute for ink on paper, for real books and the printed word, for browsing at a good bookstore or getting lost in the rare book room at a library.

hi there. just wanted to stop in and share some images from around the neighborhood during the first weeks of january. this past weekend we went to williamsburg (brooklyn) and then ice skating with some friends, which was a blast.

this coming weekend, i'm going to read some c.s. lewis and dabble in fabric screen printing. so far, so good in 2011.

things are finally winding down for me after a lot of holiday travel, and i hope to be back to more routine posting soon. you'll notice that the blog has gotten a little facelift for 2011, as i hope to use it going forward to post not only analog photographs, but also more varied creative pursuits and interests. i think the time is right, as i continue to take more art classes and hone my personal vision/style, and i do hope you'll continue to follow along.

lots of creative projects going on right now. i'm working on some portraits for my oil painting class, and have discovered that i actually like portraiture. hopefully i'll pick up my cameras more this fall/winter, especially my hasselblad. i've missed it so.

now that school has started, i haven't been shooting near as much film as i would like. that needs to change stat - fall is my favorite season to wander and make pictures. at any rate, i'm loving my classes thus far, and feel blessed to be able to learn and practice art at parsons. the teachers are really top notch.

it's been forever since i posted, but i seem to have amassed a collection of pots and plants photographs in my absence, which is something.

my family came to new york city two weekends ago, and then i finished up my summer class and headed to seattle for my sister-in-law's wedding. it's been pretty nuts lately, between work and life, so this weekend has been a much needed breather. today we relaxed and ate sweet plum shaved ice and margherita pizza at the brooklyn flea with good friends.

my aunt found a pack of polaroid 600 film that expired six years ago and was stored in less than ideal conditions. i gave it a spin over the weekend, and actually got a few shots out of it before the battery died (polaroid batteries are built into the film pack). i don't typically shoot expired film, but i can see the appeal that it has; it's kind of fun to always be surprised by what color shifts you're going to see. these were particularly yellowish-orange and blurry.

we like to grab coffee and then stroll the neighborhood on saturday mornings. sometimes i'll bring my lomo and take some pictures; this was one of those times.

while i was back in alabama a couple weekends ago, i took the opportunity to snap a few photos at my grandparents' house. but i only took a few because, well, it's rude to have your camera out when you are visiting with your momaw.

we grandkids used to love to go dig up those antique glass bottles with our papa, at what i would now assume was an abandoned alabama landfill. today i see them at antique stores here in new york for $40/bottle. go figure.

i had a big presentation at work today, and am so glad to be done with it. now i can enjoy my evenings without going through my powerpoint deck in my head. thank goodness.

we got back to new york from florida late last night. it was sweet to take a long weekend and see my little brother graduate from college.

while we were there, my grandma gave me a decades old roll of 620 film that she never got developed. i'm sure it's blank by now, but i might just try and process it anyway. could get some fun results.

this shot looks different than anything else i've shared here for a couple of reasons:

it was taken with my "new" hasselblad.
it is the first street portrait i have ever taken. ever.

i enjoy that this camera requires real knowledge of film and the equipment to use it. and the way that the zeiss lens is slow to focus. for me, it's a breath of fresh air in today's digital world.

dtb and i met up at the moma after work on friday night. thanks to target, admission is free on friday nights, which is pretty rad. it was a lot of fun to revisit some artwork and also see the cartier-bresson exhibit. such a talent - he truly was one of the masters.

some exciting things have been going on over here. to start, i got my hands on a hasselblad and decided to sign up for some summer art classes. the first roll on the new-to-me 'blad came back tonight, so stay tuned for those in the next day or two. i am so going to love this camera.

the top photo is of our apartment. i must say that i have a thing for black & white tile. i also have a thing for vintage chairs. the two folding chairs in the background are vintage finds that my papa (and the namesake of this blog) got at an auction for one dollar maybe 5-7 years ago. they are perfect for impromptu gatherings, or any gatherings really. and they are even better because they are from him.

i used to really dislike rainy days. this is probably because i used to live in the deep south and after it rained, it was humid. nasty humid. but now that i live in new york, i don't mind rainy days. i slip on my hunter boots, grab my navy golf umbrella and i'm all set.

my in-laws were in town, so we did lots of walking and exploring our neighborhood and the surrounding neighborhoods. the weather was perfect. we did brunch in the west village, dinner at the odeon here in tribeca and took a walk across the brooklyn bridge, to name a few things.

since i knew we would be doing some power walking, i grabbed my lomo and kept it in my jacket pocket, and i am so glad that i did. here are a few that i like together. hope you enjoy.

hmm. this image is not this blurry in real life, i promise. i'm playing with new ways to resize and upload my photos since they are hi res scans.

at any rate, my in-laws are flying into new york tomorrow, so posting may be a bit sparse for the rest of the week. we're looking forward to an awesome weekend exploring the city and catching up with family.

in case i don't touch base before friday (though i might just surprise you), have a great rest of the week and the greatest of weekends. cheers.

one day with friends

we enjoyed a sweet saturday with friends a couple of weekends ago. it involved a brunch of grilled cheese, french toast and stumptown coffee; wine tasting at chelsea market; and a walk through the meatpacking district and greenwich village.

one of our friends (who is also an all-star financier) is moving to abu dhabi at the end of the summer. i think a visit is in order. how about it, has anyone ever been?

i have been experimenting with night time photographs lately, and i can't wait until we start to have those long, warm nights that are perfect for picture making.

whenever i'm in philadelphia, i like to make a stop by reading terminal market. there is so much to explore and to eat. i fancy dutch eating place, the famous 4th street cookie company and metropolitan bakery, among others. how about you, have you ever been?

a five mile walk through the city

here are some photos i took on the second half of our long walk through the city this past sunday afternoon. i flew through these exposures because i wanted to finish the roll, and they ended up being some of my favorites. funny how most of the shots i really like happen when i stop thinking and just take photos.

it's been a busy (but good) week thus far. the sun is shining, the days are getting longer and i am beyond excited about springtime in new york. how are things for you?
